A birthday party with the theme ‘butterfly’

There’s nothing more fun than celebrating a birthday, but how exactly do you go about that? Today we don’t just celebrate with family. From an early age, children also expect a party with their classmates and friends. You can’t imagine anything crazy that it is possible for children from the age of four. In the past, parties were usually held at home, but that is no longer a tradition. Children now go to a playground, amusement park, zoo, cinema or sauna, while the prices of the whole thing are skyrocketing. Celebrating at home is a lot cheaper and can also be very cool, with some preparation of course.

Work with a theme

When you decide to organize a party for your child’s birthday at home, it is best to think of a theme. So you can come up with assignments around that. Of course, take something from the birthday boy’s world. That makes it all the more fun. You could also work without a theme and just let the children play, but that usually leads to arguments. Of course, take your daughter’s or son’s circle of friends into account. Also listen to your child’s wishes. If they are not too crazy for words, they can certainly be incorporated and the party will be an even greater success.

Make agreements with your child

It is important that some agreements are made in advance. You must clearly state what is and is not possible. Clearly demarcate the areas where the children are allowed so that you are not faced with any surprises in the evening. The agreements also ensure that there is less frustration during and after the party. That is good for mom’s nerves, but also for the well-being of the children.

Assignments around the theme of butterflies

Once the theme has been determined, you can look for matching assignments together with your child (and other creative people). Your son or daughter has already gained experience at other parties and friends or family sometimes have more experience or you yourself. So don’t hesitate to ask for help when writing out assignments. Think especially of nephews or nieces who lead some youth movement, family members who teach, educators, people who have already organized many birthday parties,…

A game that is fun for every age and is always successful is the musical suit. This form of game ensures that you can adapt the assignments to your group that comes to celebrate. It is also possible to divide your partygoers into different groups and turn it into a competition. This means there will be a bit more fighting in your afternoon. Only do this if you know that your own child can cope with his or her loss. Otherwise there will only be tears.

Below we work out assignments for a musical suit on the theme of ‘butterfly’.

Tell a story

If the children need to calm down and you want to make the theme clear from the start, it might be fun to tell a story first. The book ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ fits within the theme ‘butterfly’. This is a very beautiful story book with beautiful slide-out sections.

Make up your own story

If you prefer not to tell a story yourself, you can put the children to work. They make up a story about a caterpillar and a butterfly by making up a sentence one by one. Child one makes a sentence and child two adds a sequel. We continue like this until everyone has had a turn. The story can possibly be written down so that the birthday boy or girl has a nice souvenir afterwards.

Twister

With a little imagination, the balls in the game ‘Twister’ look like colorful eggs. With this board game it is important that the children can tell the left and right apart. When you work with groups, you can work with different games. Who will stay on their feet the longest?

Make a caterpillar song

Let the children make a caterpillar chorus to an existing or self-invented melody. They can do this together or in groups. Afterwards they perform this for the other group. It is also possible to give a performance at the end of the party. This way, moms and dads who come to pick up their child can also enjoy it.

Make a caterpillar mummy

Choose a victim and wrap this child completely in toilet paper. Of course, make sure you have a green version! We will make a real caterpillar mummy together.

Toilet paper flowers

Caterpillars love nature and flowers and that is why we make flowers with skewer sticks, toilet paper and colored paper. This way, all the toilet paper doesn’t go to waste. We make a beautiful bouquet from the flowers for the birthday boy/girl. Children can really be very creative here and it is amazing what results they will achieve in a short time.

Dance and sit

Put on your son or daughter’s favorite music. The children can dance around until the music stops. Then everyone must sit down as quickly as possible. The last one to sit down gets out. A very fun game, but make sure you have enough space.

I’m going on a trip and I’m taking with me…

Child one says ‘I’m going on a trip and I’m taking with me: a…’. Child two must then repeat the sentence with child one’s word and afterwards you add your own word after it. We continue like this until we can no longer remember the row. Who stays focused the longest? It is also possible to work around a theme here so that the children cannot just choose anything. Just think of ‘food and drinks’, ‘sports equipment’, ‘musical instruments’,…

Musical chairs

this game and it is always fun. Place as many chairs as there are children. Remove a chair after each piece. Anyone who remains and no longer has a place to sit is thrown out of the game. Make some arrangements in advance so that no accidents happen.

What has disappeared?

Every child is looking for something to put in the circle. One person goes outside and in the meantime an object is taken from the circle. What has disappeared?

Replicate cocoon

Prepare a pile of old, large clothes. Choose two children and let them put on as many clothes as possible in two minutes. Who is the fattest cocoon?

Pictionary

Have someone draw something and the others have to guess what it is. You can also whisper words yourself here.

Butterfly quest

Hide as many butterflies as possible in hidden places. Let the children search. Who likes it the most?

Others

Have a coloring page of a butterfly colored and stick it on a skewer, have a butterfly memory made, fold a butterfly (origami),…

Pause

Regularity

Children can be very attentive and active, but they also often need a break. So don’t forget to interrupt your planned activities for a few minutes every now and then. Here you also have to take the age of your child into account. Older children find it easier to concentrate for long periods of time.

Food and drink

Also provide something to eat and drink during the break(s). This can be very simple, but you can also get started with the children. Think carefully in advance about what you would like to see on that day. It can also be fun to bake something in advance with your son or daughter. He can then say that everything is made by himself. With older children you can save time and bake cake, pancakes or waffles on the day itself. Again, take the group, age and wishes of the birthday boy/girl into account.

Decoration

Decoration

Provide appropriate decorations. This can range from garlands to attributes.

Clothes

You can decorate the birthday boy or write on the invitation that there is a dress code. Again, take your child into account here. Does he or she like to dress up and what do his or her friends think of that?

Hats

When the children come in, they are given a hat. This makes everything a bit more festive. Of course, you only do this with young children.
