Getting married on Wadden Island Ameland

Amelanders like to get married on their island, but there are also many non-Amelanders who find the island a beautiful location for their wedding ceremony and wedding party.

Wedding date

A couple who has chosen a wedding date can contact the Ameland town hall for a reservation. The Civil Affairs Department is the designated counter for booking the town hall itself as a wedding location, but also for the Oerdhut. Civil Affairs must know the date and time of the wedding. The couple who want to get married can also indicate their preference for a wedding registrar.

Declaration

Anyone who wants to enter into a civil marriage must report this to the registrar of the bride or groom’s place of residence, where they are recorded in the population register. If both spouses do not live on Ameland, they must report this when registering their marriage. If one of the two is a non-Dutch national who wants to get married on Ameland, then at least the second of the couple must have Dutch nationality or be registered in the Netherlands. You must submit a declaration at least two weeks before the wedding date and the marriage declaration is valid for one year. The couple must make an appointment to register a marriage. This can be done on any working day and a number of matters must be discussed during the marriage registration:

  • a valid ID proving nationality;
  • a copy of the valid identification documents of the witnesses, showing all first names (passport or Dutch identity card);
  • if (one of) both is a foreigner: a statement from the immigration police.

Marriage congregation

The marriage documents are sent to the marriage municipality after the registration. The couple will receive confirmation of the agreed wedding date, time and location and the name of the registrar.

Marriage ceremony

Ameland has appointed eight special extraordinary civil registrars (babs). The chosen babs will be announced when registering the marriage. The couple does not have to choose from the eight Amelander babs, but can also bring their own wedding officiant, as long as it is an official babs. That may also be a babs from another municipality. The municipality does charge costs for importing Babs and the details of the Babs must be provided in advance.

To dawn

You can get married on Ameland on all days of the week, except Sundays. From Monday to Saturday, couples can say yes to each other from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and from 1 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.

To give evidence

The couple can bring their own witnesses, but can also ask employees of the municipality of Ameland as witnesses. There are costs involved and getting married with witnesses from the municipality of Ameland is only possible at the town hall.

Locations

Ameland has twelve wedding locations spread across the island. You can even get married on board one of the three tour boats. The boat must then remain in the harbor until after the yes word.
