Speech therapy: exchange two sounds

Children or elderly people with a language delay or language problems often benefit from speech therapy. Speech therapy can be provided by a speech therapist, in a practice or at school. You can of course also get started yourself if your child or older person does not have an indication for speech therapy, or in preparation for the upcoming speech therapy. In this article: exchanging two sounds.

Two sounds

Two sounds should not be confused with diphthongs . Diphthongs are ij and ei, au and ou, etc. We will not practice these because this has more to do with writing than with spoken language.

Switching two sounds is important for the child, because it learns to switch between consonants more quickly. This improves oral motor skills. Especially in older people with poor oral motor skills, exchanging two sounds can improve oral motor skills. This exercise is used for children who master most consonants such as K, L, M, S, T, B and P. When exchanging two sounds, the child does not necessarily need to know joined consonants such as SToel or BLoem. This exercise can be expanded later.

Getting started with two sounds

Two sounds are two vowels or two consonants that differ in oral motor skills, use of lips or tongue. But sounds can also be similar, but the tongue must be placed slightly differently in the mouth.

It is nice for children if there are pictures available. Place several pictures of two different objects in a row. For example, of a boat and of a rose. Have the child point to each picture and say the first letter. The whole word does not have to be said, but only the initial letter. Start with the alternate method and then make it less logical.

The pronunciation for the first picture can then be: RBRBRB and for the second picture : RBBRRB. It is important that the initial letter is said so it sounds like R, and not eR. The B also sounds like B and not like Bee.

Good changes between two sounds are:

  • R and B, use words like rose, cream, skirt and tree, boat, ball.
  • B and P, words like ball, boat, tree and pole, (black) Pete and daddy.
  • K and G, take words like cheese, chin, cat and green, hole, goose.
  • F and S, ideal words are bottle, bicycle, fairy and snake, snail, chair.
  • M and N, use words like mouth, mouse, moon and nose, neck, nut.
  • F and V, words like bottle, bicycle, fairy and dirty, bird, fish.
  • H and S, take for this be as fence, rooster, dog and snake, snail, chair.
  • F and G, suitable words such as bottle, bicycle, fairy and green, hole, goose.
  • B and K, use words like ball, tree, boat and cheese, chin, cat.

You can also use other pictures, for example of an object that makes the sound. A balloon for the F (blowing, you hear F), a hammer for the K (a hammer that taps makes the sound K). It is important that the same pictures are used

at all times , so that you do not suddenly come up with different pictures. The exercise is performed correctly when the sounds are said one after the other without difficulty and without pause. This at a normal speaking speed.

Three sounds alternate

Exchanging three sounds should only be done if exchanging two sounds is possible without any problems. When switching three sounds, use three different pictures. Just like with the two sounds, first put them alternately, later in illogical order. Example: Tree, Rose, Bicycle, Tree, Rose, Bicycle and later: Tree, Rose, Rose, Tree, Bicycle, Tree, Bicycle, Bicycle, Rose.
