Miss Netherlands: Election of the most beautiful woman

The beauty pageant has been held since the 1950s, where the most beautiful woman in the Netherlands is chosen. This young woman then goes to the Miss World or Miss Universe pageant with the hope of taking first place there and being crowned Miss World or Miss Universe. What is the history of the beauty pageant, what are the components of the pageant, and who were the Dutch winners?

History of Miss pageant

The oldest form of Miss pageant is the Miss World. The show was created by Eric Morley in Great Britain in 1951. He continued this until the year 2000 when he died. Since 2000 it has been under the care of Julia Morley, his wife.

Eric Morley came up with the concept based on a Bikini Competition, a festival where women dressed in swimwear presented themselves. Initially it was still about wearing bikinis, but this was soon replaced by less concealing swimwear. The show gained popularity through publicity organized by BBC in 1959. The pageant quickly became the most watched program on British television.

However, in the 1970s there was a backlash from female liberals who were against this beauty pageant. They interrupted the election using ,bombs, made of flour, water and stink bombs. This gradually led to a change in the design of the election. In the 1980s, it was no longer just an attractive appearance that was important, but also personality and intelligence. This meant that a large part of its popularity disappeared and the show was no longer broadcast on the largest channels.

When the chairman, Eric Morley, died in the 21st century and his wife took over the chairmanship, there was another major breakthrough. The first black Miss was crowned: the African Agbani Darego from Nigeria.

There was also increasing attention for charities. In 2002, the election was held in Nigeria to draw attention to a Nigerian woman who had been sentenced to stoning for cheating. The Miss World Organization also raises a large amount of money every year for children’s charities.

In addition to the Miss World pageant, the Miss Universe pageant and Miss Earth pageant are also held.

Parts of the election

Certain scores and bonus points can be held in the preliminary rounds. Some challenges used are:

  • Swimwear: The candidates wear a swimsuit and show it to an audience and jury panel.
  • Miss Talent: The candidates show their talents, such as singing, dancing and art.
  • Miss Sports: This is about the best sportswoman. The winner of this automatically advances to the semi-finals.
  • ,Beauty with a Purpose,: This concerns what the women have done before the election, especially in the field of charities and similar activities.
  • People’s Choice.
  • Personality.
