When a country’s economy is not doing well, many people end up on the streets. People receive unemployment benefits and must find work by completing the weekly job application requirement. Suitable positions are normally selected within the segment in which experience has been gained. Often, interface areas or other disciplines are not taken into account. Problems on the labor market
With an economic downturn, the opportunities for certain labor groups decrease significantly, because specific groups are often affected. Think of construction. Cutbacks often affect construction projects, causing them to be canceled. Homes, office buildings and roads are no longer being built, which means that construction workers are needed to a much lesser extent, with the risk that some construction companies will go bankrupt. Related fields such as architects, engineers and constructors will have much less work, which will also result in layoffs. Due to the poor prospects, it will be difficult to quickly find a new job in such fields. How can changing work offer a solution?
Feeling of hopelessness
Having benefits in combination with unemployment is demotivating. No work day in and day out and rejections are not a source of enthusiasm, on the contrary! It makes people feel down. Not having work is a source of annoyance for many and creates social pressure. The mortgage can no longer be paid or the resources within the income are significantly reduced. And that can be the case for a relatively long period of time.
Limited unemployment benefits
Dismissal law has deteriorated for the employee, and the rights under unemployment benefits are very limited. People are only given a limited period of time within which new work must be found. Naturally, the goal is to obtain new work within that period, before the benefit expires. With a deteriorating economy, this is more likely to be said than done. Because the conditions within fields are very unfavorable, the chances of finding work decrease dramatically.

We can do more than we think. The work we have always done is a limiting factor in our existence during unemployment. People are inclined to look for work within their own competencies. This is actually a hindrance, because there are many opportunities on the labor market. By looking beyond one’s own capabilities, additional possibilities can be found. Once these opportunities are recognized and seized, people have better options to return to work more quickly.
What have you always wanted to become?
It sounds strange, but sometimes it’s good to look back at your past. Everyone has always asked that question. If I had made that choice, how would I have ended up? This also applies to the choice of profession. Once we chose a certain direction because it suited us best at that moment. Yet a person changes with time. If you become unemployed, the question is how you proceed. Opportunities are there to be seized. Look around you and ask yourself the question. Can I quickly find work within my area of experience or can I find other job sources?
Retraining and courses, what do you do?
An important way to broaden yourself is by taking courses and training. With additional retraining you can significantly improve your options. There are virtually no opportunities within your own field, but you may be able to find very good work within related or other fields. What are you doing? Will you continue on the same tour or will you look around you? You too can find a nice job by retraining or finding other interests. This means that it is not necessary for you to sit at home unemployed.
