Development of Self-reliance – Signs of a Development Problem

Self-reliance and its development differs per child. Every child develops at its own pace. What is the ultimate age at which a child should be able to have a certain level of self-reliance? This article describes the characteristics and skills of children from 1.5 years to 7 years old to check whether there are any obstacles, an abnormal development course in terms of self-reliance, a possible developmental delay or perhaps a developmental disorder.

Signs of Obstacles to Development Self-reliance . Self-reliance means the ability to take care of yourself, to save yourself without help from others. With a young child, this naturally starts with small things, such as learning to eat for themselves. Ultimately this must develop into complete independence. Characteristics and skills are listed below, followed by (a guideline for) the ultimate age at which a child should be able to be self-reliant; whether or not the behavior in question is part of the developmental phase or is age-inadequate. This overview is intended to identify any problems, developmental abnormalities or a possible developmental disorder at an early stage.

Developmental delay – Developmental disability . Although every child develops at their own pace, there comes a certain point, a certain age, when a child should be able to master a certain task or skill. This is related to the normal, average development course of average (early) childhood development.

Developmental delay . We speak of a disadvantage if a child deviates only slightly from the average.

Developmental disability . A disorder is when a child deviates greatly from the average, is very behind or is different from his or her peers.

The overview below regarding the development of self-reliance is suitable for use by parents, caregivers, group leaders, general practitioners, child health clinics, teachers, school doctors, etc. to identify any problems and sound the alarm for help. to call if there are any problems. There is a division into 5 signals – overviews with the associated behaviors (characteristics/skills) – which indicate when the behavior should no longer occur. Or put differently: if certain behavior still occurs, it can be considered deviant.

Problems Self-reliance Identifying . It should be expressly noted that this is not a diagnostic criteria or a causal model, but only a checklist for global screening and identifying characteristics in order to (early) identify any developmental problems.
