The ‘golden’ job after VMBO or MBO: research and figures

What is the ‘golden’ job after MBO or VMBO? Does it have to be a glamor job? Is money important? Secondary employment conditions? And would we much rather become a call center employee than a body washer? How popular is a job as a personal assistant? What are the least popular jobs? And does anyone actually want to become king? Read on for remarkable research from De Telefoongids BV… What is the most attractive job for (V)MBO graduates? De Telefoongids BV conducted research with this fun approach, with remarkable results. Who would have thought that a job as a private driver is the most attractive for most of the surveyed (V)MBO graduates? For no less than 27% this is ‘the golden job’! This is followed at a distance by the profession of animal caretaker, which comes in second place with 17%. The profession of photographer also scores relatively high, at 14%. This means a third place in the ranking of the most attractive jobs for medium-educated Dutch people…

Glamour? La but…

It is also very striking that the middle-educated people surveyed keep their feet on the ground. Want to enter the glamor world after your education? Well no, not really a very favorite option. Working as a Personal Assistant is also not highly preferred. That’s not so strange. But why traditionally popular professions such as steward(ess) or the relatively new profession of wedding planner do not gain a position as a favorite profession? You wouldn’t expect that either.

Who and what?

The research discussed was commissioned by De Telefoongids BV among VMBO and MBO educated Dutch people. The reason for the research was the launch of the new job site www.GoudenGidsBanen.nl. And what is the definition of the discussed ‘golden job?’ First of all, of course, that you enjoy going there. But a golden job is also one that may not pay ‘golden’ but at least pays ‘well’. The definition of the golden job also includes that you do not have to travel more than half an hour to get to your workplace.

Does anyone else want to be queen?

If you do go into politics, then the golden job, according to the VMBO and MBO students in the survey, is that of… Queen Beatrix. And although showbiz does not score very high among the Dutch people surveyed, when you talk about the ‘golden’ showbiz job, it is that of Linda de Mol. A person who represents the ‘golden’ job in the business world for the respondents is not far away: that is Linda’s brother John de Mol. And what is the golden sports court? There are people who call Bert van Marwijk, as national coach of the Dutch national team, the holder of a golden job. But the job – or perhaps all jobs – of Johan Cruijff also receives the necessary mentions.

Body washer? No, thank you

It is not surprising that VMBO and MBO graduates do not want a job as a body washer as their first preference. In fact, 63% don’t like that. Slaughterhouse worker or well shoveler is not necessarily the first thing people think of, and that is evident: 60% and 44% respectively prefer to say thank you for the honor. But the job of call center employee is a conspicuous bottom line on the same list of undesirable jobs. 35% really don’t like that job, which means that this job doesn’t score much ‘higher’ than working as a well shoveler.

What makes working (extra) fun?

What makes work extra fun? We will leave aside the obvious good salary plus ditto employment conditions. Then the big favorite is a fairly modest wish: an annual Christmas gift, according to 40% of the participants in the survey. Even free coffee and tea comes in second in comparison at 37%.

Creating atmosphere together

Whatever kind of work you do, people are always very important. According to the VMBO and MBO students interviewed, the atmosphere is primarily determined by helping each other (76%), but having a nice chat (73%) and a sense of solidarity (56%) also score high. Just over half mention a nice and spacious workplace. Still half of VMBO and MBO educated Dutch people consider a compliment from the boss important for a good atmosphere. By the way, the respondents themselves also think that they deserve it: the people surveyed give themselves an average of 7.7 as a colleague and a 7.8 as an employee. But the boss gets a tighter pass, with a 6.8.

Don’t spend too long in the car, train or bus

As previous studies have shown, travel time is an important factor. Websites such as GoudenGidsBanen.nl therefore have a point in favor of people looking for a job, because you can search by location.

The research: who and what?

The online research into jobs and the “golden job” was provided by Stadspeil on behalf of De Telefoongids BV. The research took place via a representative sample among the VMBO and MBO educated Dutch population aged 18 years and older, with a paid job now or in the recent past. A total of 1,068 respondents participated. The reason was the creation of the website GoudenGidsBanen.nl. Through this site, De Telefoongids BV wants to offer VMBO and MBO educated Dutch people the ‘golden job in the area’. It is quite unique that the site focuses mainly on VMBO and MBO educated people. Anyone looking for a job can use the website for free.
