Falling in love with a colleague: the consequences at work

It is a good sign if you are having a good time with your colleague. Being in love is something that is normally wonderful. But what happens next if you and your colleague fall in love with each other? Is it better to keep it hidden from your manager, or is it better to look for other work? If the situation gets out of hand, the employer may take measures because he is responsible for a healthy working environment.

In love with your colleague

A good working atmosphere is pleasant for everyone. People in love create cheerfulness and dynamism in the workplace. But if you fall in love with a direct colleague, things suddenly change. Colleagues may start to wonder whether work will suffer and whether arguments will arise if there are relationship problems. Problems can become even more difficult if one of the two colleagues in love works in a subordinate position.

Task of manager

The manager will ensure that the infatuation in the workplace remains workable. An employee has the right to privacy and the employer can only interfere if he has a legitimate interest. It may well be that work will suffer and that someone will no longer be able to function properly. If the situation gets out of hand, an employer can request a termination of the employment contract. Your employer is responsible for a healthy working environment at all times.

Consequences on the work floor

An employer has no control over what an employee does privately. Large companies often have a policy to control the consequences of a personal relationship in the workplace. For example, a confidential counselor can be engaged within the organization or a company code applies. This way, the employees are aware in advance that wrong behavior can have consequences. The privacy law ensures that your private life remains protected with regard to your employer. Rules are intended to protect the workplace. This includes gossip, preferential treatment, etc.

Transfer

An employer may not require that a relationship in the workplace is prohibited or that a relationship must be reported. It is wise that there is a policy that describes how to deal with these types of situations. Transferring an employee is a major event and this is only possible if the employer has a compelling reason to do so. When transferring, not only the interests of the employer must be taken into account, but also those of the employee. A relationship between the manager and employee is seen as undesirable because it involves a relationship of dependence.

Dismissal

If a situation is so undesirable and that no solution is possible, it can be submitted to the subdistrict court judge who can decide to terminate the employment relationship. There are even cases where the employment contract is terminated without the employee receiving compensation.
