The influence of music on our state of mind

Have you noticed the influence that different types of music can have on your emotions, especially when it comes to music with a strong content? Depending on the subject of the song, our thought pattern is connected at different levels to certain memories and experiences that evoke emotions related to certain positive or negative events. Depending on the type of music, our mood changes, which is the basis for all learning and motivation.

Influence on mood

Music and songs that sound cheerful and positive increase energy, joy and motivation. Just think of music genres such as techno, country, pop and many others. These styles can provide an energy boost to an individual. The music does not have to be classical but it is important that it promotes positive feelings. Classical composers such as Bach and Mozart, on the other hand, are now used in productions with the aim of improving the learning process.

Listening to sensitive music that can induce feelings of sadness or anxiety interferes with an individual’s positive thinking by affecting neurological signals such as fight, flight, depression. In addition, hormones are stimulated that can cause diseases. Any form of music that is linked to a trauma experienced by an individual will also bring up negative feelings and memories and can give rise to anxiety, anger and negative feelings.

Music that puts you in a good mood or gives a feeling of peace and happiness promotes neural activity that stimulates the creative side of the brain. Any kind of bad feelings, on the other hand, promotes the body’s neural activity responsible for the development of depression, sadness and negativity.

Sound waves

Nowadays there are certain types of music that are specifically made for meditation or to stimulate positive thinking. These are called isochronic tones and use alpha, beta, theta, delta and gamma waves or frequencies to access certain parts of the brain and stimulate motivation and creativity. Certain tones increase the ability to relax, study and stimulate memory.

The different frequencies are recorded separately in the left and right ear. The notes help shift mood, promote a positive response and clear thinking, and create balanced chemistry leading to better decision-making and an overall sense of well-being. Any form of music that adds value to our state of mind can be considered inspiring.

Each specific sound wave has specific purposes and actions:

Alpha (7.5-14Hz)

Providing deep general relaxation, the ideal opportunity to program the mind for success. Alpha waves increase imagination, visualization, memory and learning and concentration.

Beta (14-40Hz)

These waves are associated with waking consciousness, alertness, logic and critical reasoning which translates into stress, anxiety and restlessness.

Theta (4-7.5Hz)

Present in deep meditation, light sleep and the REM dream state. The theta waves are caught somewhere between dozing off (Alpha) and waking up from a deep sleep (Delta). These waves are also considered a spiritual connection.

Delta (0.5-4Hz)

This frequency is the slowest and occurs during deep sleep and transcendental meditation. This is considered the gateway to the universal mind and the collective unconscious where the information received is not available during consciousness. This is often linked to a healing process.

Gamma (above 40 Hz)

These waves have recently been discovered. These have the fastest frequency and are characterized by a high level of alertness and information processing ability.

In summary

Music comes in the form of waves that create certain tones that vibrate our eardrums, after which the sound receptors convert them into electrical signals that are deciphered by the brain and then distributed by neurotransmitters to other parts of the brain. Positive sounds stimulate dopamine, which increases the ability to relax and concentrate. These factors all contribute to the conversion of negative thinking patterns into positive thinking.

When you enter a room where music or sounds can be heard that can evoke negative emotions or memories, it is recommended to change the music or leave the room.

If you still have the desire to learn something new, look for meditation music or other uplifting music that can positively influence the neuro transmitters. Of course, every individual is different. Music that gives one person goosebumps may not evoke any emotion in another. Find music that makes you feel good and encouraged. YouTube has music channels where you can search by different genres such as techno, meditation, house, instrumentals, country. Look it up and you will soon find a list of suitable meditation music.
